  • Respondents were read a list of occupations and asked to indicate whether it would be a good or bad idea for individuals in each to be required to undergo periodic drug screening tests. Respondents appeared most likely to support drug screening for those employed in occupations that had direct responsibility for the safety of others. In other words, respondents were much more supportive of periodic drug screening tests for those employed in such occupations as bus drivers, airline pilots, and train and subway conductors, while they tended to be less supportive of tests for such occupations as factory or construction workers, or office workers. In general, however, a majority of respondents supported periodic drug screening tests for all the job categories mentioned including those employed in the respondent's own occupation.
