WHY
BECOME A MEMBER OF THE INSTITUTE?
THE INSTITUTE
FOR A DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE
exists because there are serious threats to American employers and
employees from drug abuse and its tragic human and economic costs.
These threats include: (1) anti-drug testing legislation; (2) legal
challenges; (3) regulations which unduly restrict employer programs;
(4) misinformation or ignorance about drug testing and employer programs;
and (5) legalization campaigns.
Businesses and business organizations,
through participation in the Institute, take an active role in shaping
the Institute's policies and directing its program of action. Our
agenda reflects our members' priorities and our influence is a measure
of their commitment. You are cordially invited to participate in
the Institute and to experience the benefits of membership.
Background
In March 1989, four prominent members
of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce joined together to create a coalition
to serve the common interests of employers and employees in preventing
drug abuse and its impact on the American workplace. That coalition
— THE INSTITUTE FOR A DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE
— now includes many of the largest
companies in the United States, as well as many other businesses
and business organizations.
Purpose
The Institute represents much of
what is best about the American business community; dedication by
top business leaders, creativity and vigor in addressing a national
problem, commitment to the fairness and integrity of individual
corporate programs, a fundamental confidence in American workers,
and a willingness to act altruistically and cooperatively to assist
each other and better our society.
The Instiute — through and by its
members — believes that the business community has a leading and
highly legitimate role in preventing drug abuse, and that employers
are fully capable of winning their "war on drugs".
The results are undeniable — the
Institute is a consistent and unwavering national force on drug-abuse
prevention policy issues.
"Nobody
has taken a tougher, more intelligent, or more vigorous stand against
drugs in the workplace; in advertising and promoting what works;
and in debunking many of the myths about drugs in the workplace...
the Institute for a Drug-Free Workplace has performed a valuable
public service."
